One Battle at a Time-the War Against Cancer
11/8/2004

To many people in the U.S, cancer is something that we all fear. Families spend so much money on operations and treatments when they know it will most likely lead to death. Cancer has been the second leading cause of death, and just last year, the nation has spent $189.5 billon on cancer alone. The rate of new diagnoses continues to increase, and more than half a million people are expected to die just this year. Of course, there is good news in every story. The death rates for cancer have declined over these years, and we are finding new and improved methods of treatment. Still, there are a lot of things people can do to prevent this. Many factors can contribute to the cause of cancer. A few of these things include obesity, smoking, and environmental pollutants. Some of these causes are unavoidable though. People can get cancer through biological and genetic issues. I think that if we paid more attention and monitor this disease more carefully, we might be able to find a proper treatment, and therefore prevent all these people from dying. I give great credit for all the doctors and scientists who have spent so much time and effort on this single issue. By continuing their work and research, we might even discover a cure someday.
